Tongue and Groove

Tongue and groove plywood is a wood panel with machine grooved edges that fit together to make a strong and stable surface. It is used for flooring subfloor, decking, roof sheathing, and other applications that require high level of engineering.

It is superior to regular plywood for floor decks because it eliminates sagging and bounce at the seams between the joists. However, it can be difficult to install because the joints are tight and the plywood can be warped. A 2×4 and a sledgehammer can help close up the joints. The tongue is a small extension that sticks out along one edge of the sheet, while the groove is a slot on the opposite edge.
